Meteorologist Warns These U.S. Cities Face Growing Flood Risks—Is Yours on the List?

A warning about future flooding can sound distant until familiar city names enter the conversation. Meteorologist Todd Gross says several U.S. communities could face serious trouble as sea levels rise and climate-related flood risks grow.

The broader warning comes as climate researchers assess a future in which the multi-decadal average global temperature exceeds the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C threshold, only to decline again potentially. A 2026 United Nations report says overshoot is widely assessed as unavoidable.

That does not mean climate action has been abandoned. The report calls for faster emissions cuts, stronger adaptation, and efforts to keep any period above 1.5°C as short and limited as possible.

New York’s response shows what adaptation can look like before the worst impacts arrive. Floodwalls, raised shorelines, improved drainage, and redesigned public spaces can lower risk without requiring an entire neighborhood to move.

No project can erase every danger, and future conditions remain uncertain. Still, planning can buy time, protect infrastructure, and reduce damage when coastal storms or unusually high water reach vulnerable areas.
